Ex-Manchester City talent who swapped Rangers for Etihad finally makes English debut

Dire Mebude, a former player for Rangers and Manchester City, completes an unusual journey to his first English football match as Bristol City defeats Southampton.

The highly-regarded 19-year-old, who secured a temporary transfer from Belgian side Westerlo during the January transfer window, is currently on loan at the Robins.

In the 86th minute of Bristol City’s 3-1 victory over Southampton, Dire Mebude made his highly unconventional debut in English football by substituting for Anis Mehmeti.

The Scotland youth international’s current task is to leave his mark on the English Championship. He is the brother of another former Rangers Academy alumnus Dapo Mebude.

In 2020, Dire Mebude moved from Rangers to the Etihad, with the Ibrox side reportedly receiving a sizable compensation fee as part of the agreement.

Mebude participated in the Manchester City youth system up until the U21 level after that, but the highly anticipated rookie was never given the opportunity to play for Pep Guardiola’s starting squad.

Rangers also received 15% of the £1.65 million that the Belgian team paid for the attacker’s services after moving to Westerlo in the summer.

Dire Mebude, who is making his professional debut in the Pro League this season, is a player who has not been involved with a first team, so it is a significant price for a Belgian club to pay for him.

However, before Mebude returned to England with Bristol City in January, the forward was only able to play in three games during the early part of the season.

Rangers Academy faces Premier League competition With the money and prestige up for grabs down south, Rangers will have a hard time fending off interest from the Premier League in their best young players.

Having lost Billy Gilmour to Chelsea, Rory Wilson to Aston Villa, and Dire Mebude to Manchester City in the past few seasons, the Ibrox club is all too familiar with this challenge.

Rangers provide an alternative path and route to the elite league, but as Dire Mebude’s story demonstrates, it can be extremely difficult to succeed down south.

Even so, it took Dire Mebude nearly four years to make his English football debut after leaving the Ibrox academy, and nobody would have predicted that he would end up moving to Belgium.
