Philippe Clement defends Scottish game and insists Rangers could win French title

PHILIPPE Clement has defended the standard of Scottish football and insisted that both Rangers and Celtic would be capable of challenging for the Ligue 1 title if they played in France.

Former Ross County manager Derek Adams sparked outrage in December when he said that Morecambe,

the English League Two club he previously managed, were “100 times better” than Dingwall.

Adams also declared, in an outburst immediately following a resounding Premiership defeat at home to Dundee,

for which he later apologized, that the level of play in the top division was “shocking,” “rubbish,” and “so poor.”

Clement, whose team would overtake Brendan Rodgers’ side into first place in the league rankings

this evening if they defeat County by three goals in their game in hand at Ibrox, disagrees with the Scot.

The Belgian, who replaced Michael Beale in Govan in October,

confessed that he has been pleased by both the level of football and the passion of the fans since his arrival in the country.

The former Genk, Club Brugge,

and Monaco manager believes the Premiership is on par with Ligue 1 and that Rangers and Celtic could compete for the crown if they played in France.

“I am positive about Scottish football,” he was quoted as saying.

“I think the atmosphere is fantastic wherever we go. There is a strong football culture here.

“There is a lot of enthusiasm for football, not just on game days, but also off.

So that is a significant strength. As previously stated, I have high hopes for Scottish football

. “There is not a big, big difference between here and the French league for example.

They have maybe more teams right at the soup top there.

You don’t have a team like PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) here in this league.
