Newcastle United confident of £25m Dominic Calvert-Lewin deal to save Everton PSR worry
Paul Brown revealed on page 55 and the back page of their print edition [May 30] that Eddie Howe is reportedly very interested in the 27-year-old England international, who may decide to transfer to St. James’ Park.
This summer, a number of Everton’s star players have been linked to other teams. Jarrad Branthwaite, who Manchester United is reportedly pursuing, while Arsenal are also interested in Amadou Onana.
According to Brown, one of the Everton players drawing notice is Calvert-Lewin because of the club’s problems with PSR.
“That would virtually guarantee Everton does not break PSR rules again the following season if he is sold for £25 million or more before the end of June.”
It’s unclear how willing Calvert-Lewin is to leave Goodison Park, which has been his home for the past eight years due to injuries, goals, and form.
However, from an Everton standpoint, the Toffees need to make every effort to guarantee a much more peaceful season financially, as discussions about a new acquisition fizzle out and the team is forced to face the fact that it will need to shed one or more assets, given that Calvert-Lewin’s age and England caps would drive up his asking price.
With four goals in his final seven league games, the striker closed out 2023–24 in fine form. He played for an incredibly well-run Dyche team that avoided relegation with weeks remaining in the season, despite being docked eight points for precisely the kind of thing they are attempting to avoid this summer.
However, Everton’s hand will probably be forced.
