Cowboys May Move On from $97 Million Star Trevon Diggs After Latest Injury Setback
The Dallas Cowboys’ season has taken another hit, with the team facing tough decisions after yet another significant injury blow. Cornerback Trevon Diggs, the Cowboys’ $97 million defensive star, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a second knee surgery following an ACL tear earlier in 2023. This comes after Diggs, who signed a five-year mega-contract in 2023, played only two games this season and missed additional games due to lingering knee issues.
Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer broke the news on Twitter/X, calling it “unreal horrible luck” for the injury-riddled Cowboys. Diggs had been expected to help stabilize Dallas’ defense, but his limited availability over the past two seasons—just 13 games—has raised questions about his long-term future with the team.
Cowboys Could Cut Ties to Save Cap Space
According to Spotrac, the Cowboys have an “out” in Diggs’ contract after this season. Cutting him would cap his deal at $33 million with a $12.75 million dead-cap hit but save the team significant money in future years: $14.25 million in 2025, $19.75 million in 2026, and nearly $25 million in 2027.
While Diggs showed superstar potential in 2021 when he led the NFL with 11 interceptions, injuries have hampered his performance since then. This year, Pro Football Focus graded him at just 56.6, ranking 87th among 118 cornerbacks—his career-low score.
Tough Decisions Ahead for Dallas
The Cowboys are under financial pressure with big contracts for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb already on the books and Micah Parsons due for an extension. Cutting Diggs might become a necessary cost-saving measure, especially as the team copes with its mounting injury woes.
Despite Diggs’ incredible talent when healthy, his uncertain recovery and declining performance leave Dallas with difficult choices about whether he will remain a cornerstone of their defense—or find himself elsewhere in the NFL.
