Leeds United’s decision to let Junior Firpo’s contract run into its final months has been described as “staggering” by former player Jon Newsome.

Firpo, who joined from Barcelona in 2021, has been a crucial figure for Leeds, recording three goals and 15 assists across 100 matches in all competitions.

This season, the full-back has already contributed one goal and three assists in 15 Championship appearances. Despite his contributions, his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and there’s no sign of a new agreement.

In November, Firpo added uncertainty to his future by admitting he has “options” for moves away from Leeds United.

“Football is like that. One day you’re here, another day you’re somewhere else,” the 28-year-old said. “I’ve thought about this since we got relegated. I had options to leave, but my family is settled here. For now, we’re doing well, but I don’t know what the future holds.”

Newsome criticized Leeds’ handling of Firpo’s contract, emphasizing the potential loss of on-field quality and transfer value.

He stated: “I’m amazed the club allows players to enter the final year of their contracts. Whether they get promoted or not, the club risks missing out on either retaining him or getting a transfer fee. It’s staggering.”
