Sunderland-linked young goalkeeper commits future to League One club by signing long-term deal
Sam Tickle, a young player for Wigan Athletic who had been linked to a move to the Stadium of Light, has secured a new long-term contract with the team.
During the course of an outstanding season in the third division last time out, the 22-year-old established himself as the starting goalkeeper and apparently attracted admiring looks from a number of Championship clubs in addition to Sunderland.
Given Anthony Patterson’s unquestionable position as the team’s top goalkeeper, Sunderland was unlikely to be overly active in the goalkeeping department this summer. However, their recruitment strategy means they will always be evaluating potential successors, especially in light of the genuine top-tier interest in Patterson.
He exclaimed, “I’m thrilled to sign a new contract.”
It’s a truly joyous occasion for my family and me. It has great significance. I’ve called this place home since I was a little child, so staying longer is special.”
“We’re thrilled that Sam has decided to extend his contract with Wigan Athletic for the next four years,” Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney continued. Sam played a fantastic first full season for us last year, recording eighteen clean sheets and making his England U21 debut—a feat not done by a Latics player since Leighton Baines.
“His behavior has been excellent both on and off the field. Sam is a fantastic young talent, and we’re excited to work with him to further his growth over the next years.”
