Texans’ Azeez Al-Shaair Hit with 3-Game Ban for Lawrence Tackle; DeMeco Ryans Backs His LB
Al-Shaair received a three-game suspension for the hit that resulted in his ejection.
The NFL has issued a three-game suspension to Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair for repeated violations of player safety and sportsmanship rules. Al-Shaair was ejected during Sunday’s victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars following a controversial hit on quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
The incident occurred in the second quarter when Lawrence, recovering from a shoulder injury, slid after a 6-yard gain. Al-Shaair delivered a hard forearm hit to Lawrence’s head, despite the quarterback being well into his slide. Lawrence was carted off the field and later ruled out with a concussion.
NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan outlined the reasons for the suspension, highlighting Al-Shaair’s history of personal fouls and describing the play as a serious violation. The hit, followed by Al-Shaair’s involvement in a brawl and further unsportsmanlike conduct, was deemed unacceptable.
Al-Shaair’s suspension will sideline him without pay until January 5, when he becomes eligible to return for the Texans’ Week 18 matchup against the Tennessee Titans. He has the right to appeal under the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans defended Al-Shaair, emphasizing the challenges defenders face with late quarterback slides and criticizing the Jaguars’ reaction to the hit. Ryans also praised Al-Shaair’s character, rejecting claims that he is a dirty player.
“Azeez is an exceptional leader and plays the game the right way,” Ryans said. “His intent is never to hurt anyone. He plays fast and physical, which can sometimes be misunderstood in today’s game.”
