John Eustace issues ‘disappointing’ verdict after seven-minute Coventry City blast

John Eustace says Derby County have to learn lessons from their 5-3 defeat to Coventry City as Frank Lampard enjoyed his return to Pride Park.

Derby had fought back on two occasions to level in a fascinating Championship showdown and then went and took a 3-2 lead when Ebou Adams scored.

But the Sky Blues hit three goals without reply in a seven-minute blast to turn the game on its head and inflict a second league defeat on the Rams.

Derby were again without a large portion of their summer signings as they work on their fitness but head coach Eustace admitted that even then, they needed to defend the box better.

“Obviously, it was disappointing to lose the game,” he said.

“I thought we showed great character and great attitude, especially going a goal down on two occasions to come back and take the lead was really pleasing.

“I think that just shows the character of the group, but it was disappointing with the way they scored their three goals in such a quick time.

“It’s something that we’ve got to learn from. We’ve got to be better in both boxes. So yes, it was disappointing.

“I think on 60 minutes, it would have been nice to freshen things up a little bit.

“I felt we were relatively in control until they scored, and it would have been nice to maybe have put some fresh players on.

“But looking at the bench, I didn’t feel they’re right on their fitness at the moment, and to really keep with the intensity of the game.

“Even so, we need to be better at defending the balls in the box.”
