In order to prepare for what might be a demanding second half of the season, Philippe Clement strengthened his

hungry Ibrox squad by adding three outstanding youngsters to Glasgow Rangers’ roster during the January transfer window.

The three new arrivals are Oscar Cortes, Mohamed Diomande, and Fabio Silva; each could contribute in the

upcoming days and weeks.

Silva has already scored twice for Rangers, while the latter two looked bright while making their first start for the

club during the 2-0 Scottish Cup win over Ayr United.

But last month, the Light Blues did lose out on a few players, and Clement may come to regret some of these decisions.

While Brazilian Jefte appeared to be moving to Scotland, Lawrence Shankland was constantly linked throughout

January. However, the deal fell through at the last minute, guaranteeing more bad news for the Gers.

The Glasgow team has historically lost out on transfer targets; over the years, a number of them have gone on to larger and better things.

One name was linked a few years ago and is now thriving in the Premier League. He is also likely to be on the move

this summer; Ivan Toney.

Toney was ‘going to sign’ for Rangers

Steven Gerrard started assembling a club that may challenge Celtic’s monopoly in Scottish football and keep them

from capturing the coveted ninth league title in a row after Covid-19 cut short the 2019–20 season.

To stop this from happening, Kemar Roofe, Calvin Bassey, Ianis Hagi, and Cedric Itten were all signed. Over the

course of the next 12 months, the Light Blues were merciless as they swept aside all opponents and easily won the Premiership.

They only gave up 13 goals throughout their perfect 2020–21 season, but they were unable to build on this and lost

the trophy the next year.

Should they have recruited Ivan Toney in 2020, would the result have been different? Celtic is likely also interested in the player.

The striker, who signed with Brentford instead of Peterborough United, was targeted by Gerrard and their Old Firm rivals, but no deal ever materialized.

A year later, Toney acknowledged that he may have moved to Scotland in an interview with former Ibrox hero Ally McCoist, saying:

“I was going to sign with Rangers as well as Celtic, like you mentioned.”

Considering how he has been sweeping the Premier League in recent years, what a piece of business that could have

been for the Ibrox club.

The 6′ 1″ Englishman appeared to be a great deal for the Bees, having only been believed to have cost £5 million, with

the possibility of another £5 million in add-ons.

In his first season at Brentford, Toney more than lived up to the £5 million price tag. In 45 Championship games, he

scored 31 goals and earned ten assists, helping the London club earn promotion to the top flight for the first time

since the 1946–1947 campaign.

The former Posh striker scored 12 goals in 33 games as the team finished in a solid 13th place. He didn’t take long to

adjust to life in the Premier League.

His performances made him “sensational,” according to BBC correspondent Simon Stone, and this helped pave the

way for his second season in the top division.

If the 27-year-old’s performance was outstanding, he reached new heights in the 2022–2023 season, scoring 20

goals in the league and finishing third in the competition for the Golden Boot,

which Erling Haaland ultimately won.
