Rangers FC plot permanent move for Leeds United player
Rangers, of the Scottish Premiership, are still interested in Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt. According to TEAMtalk, the Glasgow club would want to sign the forward permanently rather than on loan.
Gelhardt’s last permanent move was in 2020, when he joined Elland Road from Wigan Athletic.
With the Whites having recently been promoted to the Premier League, the forward was undoubtedly aware that he would have to wait a bit before making his first team debut.
Despite having first-team experience, he has yet to establish himself as a vital player for West Yorkshire, which is disappointing for the 22-year-old.
He received a significant amount of playing time on loan at Sunderland during the second half of the 2022/23 season, with the forward playing a vital role at the Stadium of Light following Ellis Simms’ return to Everton. Ross Stewart was also out injured for much of that season, thus Gelhardt was constantly used and gained great experience under Tony Mowbray.
Unfortunately for him, he was unable to make a difference for them in the play-offs, so he returned to Leeds, possibly hoping to gain more playing time at Elland Road or secure another loan to further his development.
However, his loan stay on Wearside remains his only one during his tenure at Leeds, despite the fact that he hasn’t played much for the Whites since their return to the Championship.
Currently, he is behind Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph in the pecking order, with Patrick Bamford available as a backup when fit.
Rangers stance on Joe Gelhardt becomes clearer amid Leeds United exit links
With Joseph now ahead of Gelhardt in the pecking order, it appears that Gelhardt will leave at some point, although it is unclear where he will go next.
Plymouth Argyle, Portsmouth, Preston North End, and Stoke City are thought to be interested in signing the striker, but they face competition from the Gers. According to TEAMtalk, the Gers would love to sign him on a permanent basis, but they may struggle to match his asking price.
Gelhardt’s contract at Elland Road won’t expire until the summer of 2027, allowing Leeds to demand a high price for the 22-year-old. Furthermore, the Whites have only granted him permission to seek a loan departure at this time.
Joe Gelhardt should seek permanent Leeds United exit
He may only be 22, but Gelhardt should consider obtaining a permanent exit.
This will allow him to settle somewhere else and possibly play more frequently. However, regular playing time at Ibrox is not guaranteed, and he must ensure that he gets regular starts wherever he goes next.
Even if he has to start in a lesser league than he prefers, playing consistently before moving up the pyramid may be a good alternative for him, and it may help to boost his confidence.
It’s unfortunate for him that he isn’t playing often, because Elland Road is a fantastic place to be, but he needs to put his profession first and acquire as much pitch time as possible
