Nathan Patterson, a defender for Everton, was sent off for the under-21 team,
adding another setback to his already miserable season.
Following a 6-0 loss to Chelsea in April of last year,
the right-back sustained a hamstring injury that kept him out of action for almost six months.
The Toffees were patient with Patterson’s return because of the seriousness of his problem,
which necessitated surgery.
He has played three times for the under-21 team since getting fully fit again,
but he hasn’t played a minute for Sean Dyche’s team and has been a substitute for five games.
Patterson consequently went back down to play for the young Blues in yesterday evening’s
Premier League Cup match against Watford. Jake O’Brien also made an
appearance after seeing little action since signing from Lyon, and Armando Broja,
who had joined Everton on loan from Chelsea in the summer,
was given his bow following an Achilles injury.
It was a frustrating evening for Patterson, who received a red card after two bookings as
Paul Tait’s team lost 1-0 at Kings Langley. Shortly after the hour,
he gave up a corner and kicked the ball away, earning him his second caution.
Patterson will be available for Everton’s Premier League trip to Manchester United on Sunday,
but he must now serve a one-match suspension.
The 23-year-old will not be able to play for the under-21s against Ipswich on Friday, December 6,
due to competition-specific suspension regulations.
Youssef Chermiti was sent off for similar behavior last season after scoring two goals
for the under-21 team in a 3-1 victory over Fulham in the Premier League International Cup.
He was available, nevertheless, for Everton’s Premier League matchup with West Ham.
O’Brien played the whole game, while Broja, who is still working his way back to full fitness,
played the whole first half.
