England defeated the Republic of Ireland 5-0 at Wembley Stadium, with three Newcastle United players in the lineup.
Lee Carsley took a risk at Wembley by starting three Newcastle United players. Ironically, the Magpies have lost nine straight games at the heart of English football.

The most recent of these occurred in February, when Newcastle blew their line against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final. So, without even realizing it, Carsley was tempting fate by having three Newcastle players nominated to the England squad sheet. But boy, did they deliver.

To be sure, the Republic of Ireland were a worn-out team that failed to score against the Three Lions in 180 minutes of Nations League play. However, a stunning defeat to Greece on England’s last Wembley visit, along with Carsley managing his final game before Thomas Tuchel’s hiring, increased the strain slightly.

Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall, and Anthony Gordon are the first Newcastle players to start for England since Rob Lee, David Batty, and Alan Shearer against Georgia in 1997. The former, finally in top form after a slow start to the season, made his debut and could have easily passed for a 100-cap international.

Hall, who made his debut in Athens on Wednesday, also played the entire game to strengthen his case for the left-back position. The highlight for Newcastle fans was Gordon’s first England goal, which came from a Livramento cross.

With an average age of 21.7, the future seems promising for both club and country. Less than two years ago, neither youngster wore the black-and-white stripes, but they now have responsibility for Newcastle’s future success.

The post-takeover strategy has been to buy talented young players and allow Eddie Howe to shape them in his image, regardless of outside noise criticizing the bedding-in process. Who could argue against a system that becomes more tried and true with each passing game?

Livramento, Hall, and Gordon will enter the West Ham United gameweek with a spring in their step following the Three Lions victory. The Magpies have developed three England internationals for a total of £105 million; in an FFP/PSR-dominated world, they might have done much worse.
