They’ve been “pretty average” though can’t win the Title – According to BBC Pundit

Chris Sutton concedes Rangers have been “pretty average” recently, but praises Philippe Clement for getting the best out of the squad at Ibrox.

The former Celtic striker stated in his most recent piece for the Daily Record (10 February) that the Belgian is doing an excellent job at Ibrox, following his 19th win in 23 games since his October appointment.

Following that win, the Gers drew level with Celtic on points,

but Brendan Rodgers’ side answered with a 2-1 victory over Hibernian 24 hours later.

And Sutton said that Clement has an average squad at his disposal but has done a “fine job” of getting the most out of the group thus far,

with the Gers presently firmly on Celtic’s tail in the Scottish Premiership title race.

He wrote: “Long-term and a larger picture in terms of the Europe season would be troubling enough,

but it’s the here and now that should worry fans since Rangers are right on Celtic’s tail.

“Philippe Clement is doing a good job. I’ll be honest, they’re very mediocre,

but the management is finding ways to get the most out of them and produce results.”

Sutton and Celtic feel the Rangers pressure.

It appears that the former Celtic striker is feeling the strain of Clement’s side following their stunning win against Aberdeen,

which has left the Hoops worried as the Scottish Premiership title race heats up.

Sutton may not be afraid of the Rangers team right now, but he is certainly intimidated by Clement’s effect and advancement at Ibrox,

and that sentiment may well be shared by their cross-city rivals at Parkhead.

Celtic have struggled in recent weeks, and it is critical that the Gers maintain the pressure on Rodgers’ side,

as it is all they can do in a closely contested title fight.

No one can detract from the fantastic work being done under Clement’s supervision,

and what’s more impressive is the fact that he has inherited the squad from Michael Beale.

Imagine what the Belgian could do with the squad built in his image.

Mohamed Diomande and Oscar Cortes have been brought in at Ibrox in the transfer window,

two signings that point to the transformation which is being undertaken.

Clement has made significant adjustments to the Rangers’ playing style, as well as the energy and ferocity that he requires in each game.

With 19 wins in 23 games, the Light Blues are now a significant danger,

more so than they have been during Steven Gerrard’s stay, and major credit must be given to Clement’s transformation of the club.
