After playing for four different teams in as many years,

veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore recently finished his 12th season in the NFL.

According to Jon Machota of The Athletic,

Gilmore has expressed his desire to stay in Dallas for the 2024 season despite his recent shifting around.

On a local radio program, Gilmore declared, “I want to come back.”

“That’s the plan, but we can’t talk until March. I think we have the pieces to get there,

and I want to be a part of that.”

Even though his season statistics might not indicate it,

Gilmore, 33, has had injury struggles in the past few years.

Gilmore would miss the first seven weeks of the 2021 season because of the injury he sustained in 2020, which kept him out of five games in 2020,

including the final two with a partially torn quad.

He would bounce back nicely in 2022,

starting all but the season finale in Indianapolis,

but again in 2023 injuries would rear their ugly heads.

It was announced three weeks before to Super Wild Card weekend that Gilmore discovered he had injured his labrum in his right shoulder.

That kind of injury would definitely warrant season-ending surgery at that point in the competition. But Gilmore deliberately chose not to have surgery, choosing instead to tough it out in the hopes of making it to his second Super Bowl appearance. In Dallas’ defeat to the Packers, Gilmore played every defensive action while donning a shoulder harness. If he had been given the chance, he would have done that three more times.

Gilmore had surgery shortly after the Cowboys’ season ended in a loss to the Packers, as reported by ESPN’s Todd Archer. After surgery, Gilmore should recuperate in four to six months, so he should be ready to return in time for training camp, regardless of where he signs. It’s unclear if Gilmore’s stated restriction on communication until March was self-imposed because both parties ought to have complete access to one another for talks. In any case, Gilmore would prefer to rejoin the Cowboys for training camp.
