The Gers were connected with the Scotland international throughout January, but Hearts have now clarified that no bids were made.The exact reason Rangers did not sign Shankland is unknown, but they will get another chance in four months when the window reopens.

As things stand, the prolific scorer will have a year left on his contract and will very certainly be available for a low price.

Shankland was again at his best in Hearts’ 1-0 victory over St Johnstone on Wednesday (7 February), scoring the game’s only goal.

The 28-year-old handled a searching pass into his path 18 yards from goal, holding off one opponent,

beating another, and slotting the ball home.

Lawrence Shankland is in top form for Hearts.
According to Michael Stewart on BBC Sportscene [8 February, 44m 37s], Shankland “is a man bang in form” right now.

“This goal – don’t underestimate just how hard it is to initially avoid contact and then keep awareness of where the ball is,” he said.

“He’s in complete control of the situation, and his touch is superb. It’s a fantastic finish.

“His recent form is really fantastic. Some of the objectives in this run have been out of this world!”

Shankland currently has 11 goals in his last ten games and 23 across all competitions for club and country.

While Cyriel Dessers has begun to find his feet,

he still has a long way to go before reaching the standards demonstrated by Shankland in Edinburgh.

If anyone at the club had any reservations about making a move previously,

it now appears to be a no-brainer heading into the summer.
