Man United great Gary Neville gives honest comparison of Rangers and Celtic atmospheres
According to Gary Neville, the atmosphere at Ibrox against Rangers was the best he has ever encountered while playing for Manchester United.
During an interview with The Overlap podcast on February 7, Neville described the noise levels underground as
“staggering.” The former England international participated in the Champions League group stage match that
United won 1-0 at Ibrox in October 2003.
Neville remarked, “Ibrox had the best atmosphere I have ever seen in my life.” “I thought, ‘What the f*** is this?’
right before the game started. Although Celtic and Galatasaray were noisy, I had never seen noise like that at Ibrox
until the first few minutes of the game. Stunning.
Ibrox atmosphere better than Celtic Park? Keane, a fellow former Man United player who ended his career at Celtic,
interjected. This is a debate that is discussed almost as frequently as the one about whether Rangers and Celtic
should play in the English Premier League. In the end, Neville is a neutral in this case and has played at both
grounds in the same competition, so his opinion counts more than Keane’s. Rangers fans take pride in making the
ground one of the loudest and most hostile anywhere on the continent. Regrettably, there haven’t been many
memorable Champions League nights under the lights in recent years.
But there have been some truly amazing moments in the Europa League, especially during that 2022 run to the championship.
And since the Europa League playoffs are drawing near, fans won’t have to wait much longer for European football to return to Ibrox.
Just make sure the volume is at least as high as it was during that game against United a few decades ago.
