$21,855m Fine: Again, Dallas cowboys fined for violence, NFL investigations ongoing for more punishments.
FRISCO – Three Dallas Cowboys have received penalty for their roles in various situations during the team’s victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6; additional punishment is likely to follow for future fighting-related conduct throughout the league.
Defense end Dorance Armstrong, safety Markquese Bell, and safety Jayron Kearse will all be penalized monetarily for their “unnecessary roughness” hits during Monday night’s 20-17 victory.
Armstrong and Kearse will each pay a fine of $21,855 while Bell will owe $4,681.
The Cowboys (as well as Kearse himself) view the hit that occurred in the second quarter as problematic. He was penalized for tackling L.A. quarterback Justin Herbert helmet-to-helmet, a play that also resulted in a 15-yard yellow flag during the game. The play was controversial since Herbert started a slide as Kearse was already set to make a tackle.
During the game, Kearse’s hit also resulted in a 15-yard penalty.
The NFL’s announcement on Sunday to crack down on brawls that occurred before a few games last week—including one in Los Angeles where Dallas defensive end Dante Fowler took a swing at Chargers running back Austin Ekeler’s head, completely taking off Ekeler’s helmet—is perhaps the biggest problem moving forward.
Sam Williams, a defensive end, and defensive tackle Mazi Smith were two of the Cowboys’ small army that battled a similar number of Chargers who all went into the thick of things.
A comparable altercation occurred on Sunday prior to the start of the Cleveland Browns vs. San Francisco 49ers Week 6 game.
