Three weeks ago the away support suffered another sore one in Dortmund, visiting the legendary Westfallen Stadium, home of the Yellow Wall left a bitter taste in the mouth with serious questions being asked about where Celtic stood in the big picture of European football.

Since that painful night Celtic have edged past Ross County and been held to a home draw by Aberdeen, the omens weren’t promising for a trip to face the Europa League holders where Arsenal were at full stretch on Matchday 1 to pick up a 0-0 draw.

The weather during the day in Bergamo felt much like home, drizzle and cloud in the north west ahead of the 6.45pm kick off.

Celtic survived the opening stages, grew into the match, closed down their celebrated opponents and edged towards half-time.

Into the second half and the plan was still working, Celtic were growing into the match with Atalanta running out of ideas, top names were substituted.

Brendan Rodgers made changes but the plan and system was the same, Kyogo Furuhashi had a few half chances but the clock reached 90 with the score still level.

Atalanta had two promising free kicks and a corner in the four minutes of stoppage time before the final whistle blew to kick off scenes of celebration in the away corner of the Stadio di Bergamo.

Finishing just before 9pm locally there was time to celebrate in town, next stop on the Champions League tour is Zagreb on December 10, hopefully for more than the Christmas markets.
