The 26-year-old Dutch defender, who was previously valued at £6 million, is reportedly being pursued by several

teams this month.

Philippe Clement is reportedly an admirer of the player as he looks for defensive reinforcements.

Both Ridvan Yilmaz and Borna Barisic have been tipped for transfer moves away from Ibrox which has seen the

Gers linked to a number of full backs and Smal is said to be one of the players the Rangers hierarchy would be

interested in striking a deal for if they player becomes available.

A ‘cut price’ transfer fee has also been mentioned.

While Leon ten Voorde of AD’s Twente reporter thinks the club has reached a tipping point in contract negotiations

with the defender, his present club,

FC Twente, is reportedly hoping they can still hang onto the left back this month.

“FC Twente have said take it or leave it” in reference to their most recent agreement as several clubs’ circle,

he said on the De Warming Up program.

Adopted as ‘Smaldini’ in his native Italy due to similarities with the great Paolo Maldini,

he was a key member of a team that allowed the fewest goals in the Eredivisie in 2022–2023, and he recorded an incredible

10 assists from open play, ranking second in the Dutch top division only to attacking midfielder Dusan Tadic.

Smal has developed into one of the league’s most important creative players over the years,

and he seems to fit in well with the Rangers lineup.

Despite his emergence over his years with FC Twente, they previously admitted they need to be “realistic”

that “both parties have to want” a deal to materialise if they are to see him extend his stay in the Netherlands – meaning it

may be a perfect time for the Glasgow giants to pounce.
