Celtic ‘learn’ future fee for deadline day signing as ex-Rangers defender gives verdict on title race
Ahead of the Hoops’ eagerly awaited Premiership matchup with Hibs, Rangers’ recent league comeback has put them level on points with the defending champions Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.
In an attempt to close the seven-point gap between themselves and their bitter city rivals, who won the league the
previous season, Rangers made significant reinforcements in January. After joining the team in January, players like
Oscar Cortes, Mohamed Diomande, and Fabio Silva have gradually assimilated into the group. Supporters are
hoping that the trio can lead the team to a title for the first time since 2021.
Even so, former Hearts midfielder Andy Halliday, who joined Motherwell on loan in January, feels that the Gers
haven’t done enough to be considered favorites in the title fight, despite their hiring during the winter transfer
window.
The 32-year-old, who played in over 100 league games for Rangers from 2015 to 2020, explains that their inability to sign a striker with a lot of offensive ability may be their biggest obstacle to winning more championships. He also takes issue with Fabio Silva’s goal scoring track record after leaving Wolves on loan.
Halliday stated on the Open Goal podcast: “In my opinion, Rangers are the favorites to win the title if they sign a No.
9 in January who you believe will score 15 goals by the end of the season.
It’s unjust to Dessers because he has been performing admirably lately, but sometimes you never know what to
expect (from him). “I believe this one is going right down to the wire because I still imagine both clubs dropping
points—there are still two Old Firm games—and I’ve said this for the last couple of years, and both times I’ve been
wrong. Fabio Silva’s goal scoring record isn’t particularly impressive, though. I am referring to a man who will
consistently surpass your goals every single week. That is not on Fabio Silva’s record.
On Saturday, March 2, Motherwell will play Rangers, and it’s possible that Halliday will start against his previous employers.
