Oscar Cortes’ injury mystery persists.

First, the Rangers recruitment guru spoke with RangersTV at length about his time in Glasgow, where he is approaching a year as head of the club’s recruitment department.

Since then, Nils Koppen has been making headlines after conducting a lengthy two-part interview with the Rangers Review in which he discussed everything from his success stories at PSV to transfer interest in Abdallah Sima.

But of all the moves Koppen has made so far at Rangers, there is one deal that is under extreme scrutiny and that the Belgian insists will pay benefits in the years to come.

When the Rangers recruited Oscar Cortes on loan from RC Lens in January, little was known about the Colombian winger.

Rangers’ links to networking event TransferRoom sparked a conversation about the 20-year-old ex-Millonarios prospect, who had just been in France for six months.

Following a promising start at Ibrox, Cortes sustained an injury in a March win against Kilmarnock, necessitating surgery.

With the winger recovering in time for the start of pre-season, Rangers had seen enough to sign a reported £4m loan-to-buy extension for Cortes in the summer.

However, on the first day of the new season, Oscar Cortes collided with Hearts and sustained an injury that sidelined him for Champions League qualification and the first half of the season.

With Cortes’ comeback from the September international break in a 1-0 victory over Dundee United, the Colombian’s dismal run of injuries continued.

After suffering a training ground injury that Philippe Clement attributed to ‘poor luck’, the Rangers manager expressed confidence that there are no concerns about the winger’s injury record.

At the time of writing, it is unclear how long the Rangers will be without Oscar Cortes due to this fresh injury issue.
