JUST IN: Mason Greenwood finally speaks on his career decision to sign a new contract.
Bayern Munich keep a close eye on former Manchester United striker
Bayern Munich are reportedly one of the several big clubs in Europe that are keeping a close eye on former Manchester United and current Marseille striker Mason Greenwood.
After a fantastic start to the season with Marseille, Mason Greenwood is attracting interest from top European clubs, including Bayern Munich.
According to Talksport in England, Bayern, FC Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid are keeping a close eye on Marseille forward Mason Greenwood. All three clubs have recently scouted the English striker during the games in Ligue 1.
Greenwood has scored five goals in four Ligue 1 games for Marseille after arriving at the club from Manchester United in the summer. The English striker also delivered good performances during his loan spell at Getafe last season, scoring ten goals and providing six assists across all competitions.
Marseille will demand a hefty fee for Greenwood next summer if he enjoys a prolific campaign in Ligue 1. Along with the significant length of his contract, Manchester United’s big sell-on clause (reportedly 45%) will ensure Marseille tries to get at least double the fee they paid for him (£26.6 million, including add-ons).
The 22-year-old can play as a striker and on the right flank. He can also play behind the striker in the number ten position. Greenwood is a good dribbler and quality finisher inside and outside the box.
Bayern Munich were expected to sign a striker in the summer after allowing Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to leave on a free transfer. However, the contract extension of Mathys Tel and the signing of Michael Olise meant they had plenty of options for all attacking positions. They could be in the market for a versatile forward next summer since Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman, and possibly Serge Gnabry may leave the club in the next 12 months. From that perspective, it makes sense for Bayern to keep tabs on Greenwood.
Bayern should stay away from Mason Greenwood
There are no doubts about the quality of Mason Greenwood, but Bayern should stay away from the forward due to moral reasons. The English striker was arrested in 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault after police became aware of graphic images and videos circulating on social media websites.
The charges were discontinued by the Crown Prosecutor Service in February 2023, but he remained suspended by Manchester United. The Red Devils planned to integrate him back into the squad, but backlash from fans forced them to loan him out to Getafe and eventually sell him this summer.
The Bavarian faithful will be outraged, rightly so due to the above reasons, if Bayern end up signing Greenwood. There was a lot of outrage about the club’s plans to sign Jerome Boateng last season. There are several promising young versatile forwards in Europe that Bayern can sign instead of Greenwood. The Bavarian faithful would like to see Greenwood far away from Munich even if it meant that the club would not sign any other forward next summer.
