Celtic have had a number of captains over the years who have been responsible for motivating and, sometimes dragging, the team to some incredible successes over the years.

Without a doubt, Billy McNeill is the greatest-ever Celtic captain. Leading a team full of Scots to beat Inter Milan in the 1967 European Cup will never be topped. At least not in my lifetime.

However, Celtic have still had the likes of Scott Brown overseeing a second nine-in-a-row and a Quadruple Treble.

Callum McGregor led Celtic to their record-breaking eighth domestic treble and Tom Boyd also took Celtic to their first treble since the Jock Stein era in 2001.

The point is, to lead Scotland’s most successful club takes a certain kind of character and when it was suggested to Scott Allan that one of Brendan Rodgers‘ summer additions could be a potential successor to Callum McGregor.

The ‘excellent’ Luke McCowan as a potential Celtic captain

A Celtic fan suggested to Allan that Luke McCowan could go on and lead Celtic after McGregor, the former Celtic midfielder says the new summer addition’s influence already stands him in good stead.

Allan told Superscoreboard, “I think we’re obviously looking a long way down the line, but what I would say is I think the impact that he has made from the bench has been excellent considering how strong a midfield Celtic have at the moment.

“I think his influence on the game, he has great energy, composed on the ball on Sunday, a bit of class with the pass against St Johnstone. So he has started really well.

Luke McCowan tipped for Celtic ‘longevity’

The one problem that McCowan has at the moment at Celtic is to earn a regular starting spot but Allan reckons that won’t be a problem for the former Dundee captain as he believes he is at Parkhead for the long haul

Allan continued, “And then when he does get that chance from the start, is he going to keep his shirt? Ultimately, he needs to be better than Hatate, Engels and at some point, Bernardo, and that’s really difficult.

“Those guys, the player trading model Celtic have, they’re looking to move those guys on maybe a year, two years from now for a hefty fee.

McCowan has made four appearances so far and has already opened up his goalscoring account for Celtic in the win against Hearts this season.

Helping to change the game for Brendan Rodgers in Celtic’s 2-1 win over Ross County, McCowan’s influence at Parkhead is clear as he signals his intention that he’s not just here to make up the numbers.

Can the 26-year-old become Celtic’s next captain? It’s far too early to make any kind of judgement like that as McCowan must be allowed to settle in and find his feet at the club.
