Following Watford’s Premier League relegation, Watford legend Troy Deeney disclosed how close he was to joining Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019–20 campaign.

Deeney discussed his talks with José Mourinho, the Spurs manager at the time, in an interview with talkSPORT, showing how the transfer almost happened.

Spurs and Arsenal both shown interest in Deeney when Watford was relegated. But it was his discussions with Mourinho that got him the closest to completing his relocation to North London.

Deeney clarified that although Brazilian striker Carlos Vinicius was Tottenham’s top priority at the time, Mourinho made it known that Deeney would be the next in line if the Vinicius deal fell through.

Despite the fact that he would no longer be Watford’s star player and would instead be a supporting cast member, the attacker was thrilled about the prospect of joining Spurs and appreciated Mourinho’s candor.

Considering the possible move, Deeney remarked:#

 

Yes, Jose and I had a conversation. I didn’t talk to Mikel since that was more of an Arsenal board-level concern. They were addressing it and considering how we could make it work.

Since I wasn’t going to these locations with the intention of starting, it seemed as though the clubs were saying, “Sure, let’s do it, as long as [his attitude is right].”

Their desire was Carlos Vinicius. Their man objective was him. And it got to the point where they would bring me in if it didn’t occur. I asked Jose what he wanted to do in our conversation. How would you like to proceed? Jose also wanted to make sure I could handle the transition from being the main man
