REVEALED : Why Sunderland must be ‘really careful’ as boss outlines next steps for exciting
After Tommy Watson, a teenage winger, had several first team opportunities,
GRAEME Murty warned Sunderland to be “really careful” with the rising star.
Before the current international break, Watson has only played five minutes of
Championship football for Sunderland. However, he has been a member of
the squad for the last seven league games and was used as
a late substitution by Regis Le Bris in the three games before.
With an 18-year-old who was the target of a £2 million deadline day
deal from Premier League team Brighton, Sunderland has very high expectations for him.
However, Murty, the Under-21s manager, has emphasized the value of patience with
the left winger, who will be watched carefully both on and off the field.
The Sunderland coaches will have confidence in their ability to strike the correct mix between providing Watson with important first team appearances and without overtaxing the highly-regarded rookie.
Murty adds that it’s crucial to ensure that Watson is only getting started and that the flanker doesn’t take his success too lightly despite seeming to entrench himself in Le Bris’ starting lineup.
“We need to exercise extreme caution,” murty stated.
“Tommy is a skilled gamer who is now enjoying himself. We need to ensure that this doesn’t end up being his year’s high point.
If this is the pinnacle of his year we have to look at our programme and how we’re supporting our players.
“We want this to be a springboard for Tommy. We’re really careful with our messaging to his friends, family, everyone who’s watching him that this is still a very young man developing his game. He’s going to make mistakes, he’s going to be really raw at times.
“We have to make sure we’re consistent with him. We’re not too high or low.”
