Former referee Dermot Gallagher has stated that the penalty that Leicester City was denied in their victory against Bournemouth would have been given last season.

Midway through the first half, with a 1-0 lead, City thought they should have had a chance for a second goal from the penalty spot when

Illia Zabarnyi used his hand to stop Stephy Mavididi’s pass. The on-field ruling was upheld by a VAR review, however, and the appeals

were dismissed. On its Match Center account on X (formerly Twitter), the Premier League provided an explanation for their choice. “The

referee’s call of no penalty for Zabarnyi’s potential handball is checked and confirmed by VAR, determining that the ball was played from

close proximity and his arm was in a natural position,” the statement reads.  That explanation did not go down well with City supporters,

with Zabarnyi’s arm appearing to be outstretched. But Gallagher, on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch feature, said the decision was correct, albeit

adding that the penalty would have been awarded last season.

Over the summer, there was a tweak to the interpretation of the handball law. Referees chief Howard Webb accepted that there were

instances last season where penalties were awarded when players’ arms were in a justifiable position, and he wanted those sorts of

incidents to stop.

“I think it’s a natural position,” stated Gallagher. He also goes to take his arm back and it is so close. The previous season that was scheduled to air.

The former referee approved with the choice to deny Bournemouth an equalizer as well. Evanilson attacked the cross, but he was offside

“First of all, he didn’t interfere with play; rather, he interfered with an opponent because he didn’t touch the ball,” stated Gallagher.

Because he goes to steer the ball into the far corner while it is so close, it is considered interference, and the goalie must wait until he

heads the ball before reacting.
