Just in: Beckford shares his insights on the fortunate aspects of  Illan Meslier error after Leeds howler v Sunderland

 

Jermaine Beckford believes Leeds United fans need to “get behind” Illan Meslier after his mistake against Sunderland.

The Whites were in the lead with less than a minute to go in the game and looked set to take three points from one of their title rivals.

Meslier, however, had other ideas and after the ball bounced weirdly in front of the Frenchman, it somehow managed to end up in the back of his net without much help from a Sunderland player.

Writing via his personal X account (4 October), Beckford shared his thoughts on the situation.

“I really feel for Meslier tonight, not put a foot wrong tonight and in the blink of an eye one mistake changes the whole game in the final seconds,” he wrote.

“Fortunately, he’s going to save us more points than he will cost us. Let’s get behind him.”

Junior Firpo was evidently not too happy with how Meslier conceded his second of the game as he stormed down the tunnel at full-time which feels as if it was quite a harsh reaction from the left-back.

Meslier has been Leeds’ number one for a fair few seasons now and last term was arguably the best of his career.

While this season has been quite topsy-turvy for the West Yorkshire outfit, the Frenchman has continued to be at the top of his game.

The 24-year-old was linked with many teams during the summer window with teams such as Marseille showing an interest in the ‘keeper.

Not only does this show the talent he has but it also shows why the Whites should be looking to keep him around for as long as possible.

Fans and pundits alike came out with many messages of support for the former Lorient man with Jeff Stelling even hitting out at those who were piling on the abuse.

There’s still plenty of time left in the season for Leeds to reach the top of the table and while winning against Sunderland would have been ideal, it just wasn’t meant to be.

In other Leeds news, Sunderland ace Alan Brown has fired a sarcastic dig towards Meslier.
