Leicester City loanee just showed Steve Cooper what he’s missing in ‘sensational’ display that made history
Steve Cooper had to run the rule over his Leicester City side this summer after succeeding Enzo Maresca as manager.
With Leicester City prepared for their return to the Premier League, Steve Cooper had to swiftly identify the areas of
his squad that he believed needed improvement. In a hectic transfer window, Leicester signed nine players, including
their finest player, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who joined Chelsea alongside Enzo Maresca. With Patson Daka injured in
the final pre-season friendly, Cooper was keen to bring a striker in, and he eventually got his wish on Deadline Day
with the loan of Odsonne Edouard.Cooper also had another striker at the club in Jamie Vardy, but he made it clear
that Tom Cannon was not in his plans before agreeing to a season-long loan with Stoke City.
Cannon’s treatment was
severe given that he is a young centre- forward who only signed with the club in the summer of 2023. While he was
behind Vardy, Daka, and Kelechi Iheanacho in the pecking order, Leicester evidently believed Cannon was talented
enough to pay £7 million to sign the 21-year-old from Everton. That followed a loan spell in the Championship with
Preston, where Cannon scored eight goals in 20 games, and he has now returned to the second division with Stoke to
kickstart his career. After failing to score in his first three league appearances for Stoke, Cannon had an immediate
impact, scoring four goals in a 6-1 victory over Portsmouth on Wednesday night, including three in nine minutes.
Cannon also made Stoke history by being the first player in 24 years to score four goals in a single game. After being
turned down by Cooper, Cannon has come to Stoke with a point to prove. He certainly accomplished that in his four-
goal effort against Portsmouth, which was described as a “sensational centre-forward performance” on Sky Sports
commentary. In addition, Stoke on Trent Live rated Cannon’s performance 9.5/10, saying: “Superb. The first Stoke
player to score four goals since 2000, with pace, smart runs, and a lethal touch. “Up and running, and then some.”
Cannon scored four goals, gained a penalty, converted it, and was a constant thorn in Portsmouth’s side throughout
the game.
Now, the striker must back up his impressive performance when Stoke visit to Swansea City this weekend.
