The strengths & weaknesses Celtic should expect from Borussia Dortmund

Derek Rae, the legendary football broadcaster, is one of the people who is most qualified to discuss German football and draw comparisons with the Scottish game.

And he thinks Celtic, this evening (Tuesday, October 1) at Signal Iduna Park, have a good chance of defeating Borussia Dortmund.

On the first matchday of the newly-formed UEFA Champions League league phase,

Celtic hammered Slovan Bratislava 5-1. Having won their first six games without giving up a goal, they are presently leading the Scottish Premiership.

The Hoops board strongly supported manager Brendan Rodgers throughout the summer transfer window,

as evidenced by the arrival of players like Arne Engels for a club record cost and the smart signing of Adam Idah, who returned permanently.

Before Celtic’s most recent European test in Germany, Rae stated as a guest on Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club: “I think Celtic have a chance in this one.

” Though I doubt Celtic supporters will believe that the game will be simple,

especially because they are playing a squad who advanced to the Champions League final the previous year.”

The analyst, who was born in Aberdonia,

went on to discuss Dortmund’s advantages and disadvantages, saying, “I would use the word schizophrenic to describe Dortmund,

and in fact the main headline in the newspaper today was ‘Balancing Act’.” Dortmund is attempting to strike this delicate balance.

“Attacking wise they can be really excellent, if you watched their game against Bochum on Friday, they came back from 2-0 down,

it could’ve been 3-0 down and probably should’ve been. But they managed to prevail, and they still have that ability.

That’s Celtic’s warning, then. Despite the fact that they lack solidity in the rear and exude weakness.

“With Dortmund, I haven’t really seen a clear identity yet.

The current coach, Nuri Sahin, was hired in as an assistant in January to support the outgoing coach, Edin Terzic.

“While Nuri Sahin is a respected player, I don’t think he has a strong presence on the team.

It still lacks a great deal of conviction. I would argue that each person has unique qualities.

Keep a watch out for Serhou Guirassy, who recently signed from Stuttgart in the summer,

and Karim Adeyemi, who is a left-footed striker who typically plays on the right.

He is a complete striker, having scored 28 goals in 28 games the previous campaign. He’s somebody who can cause Celtic difficulty.

“There are areas to be worried about but I think there are areas that Celtic can exploit.”
