Xabi Alonso breaks a Bundesliga record against Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich’s flawless start under Vincent Kompany ended on Saturday evening when they were subdued by Bayer Leverkusen at the
Allianz Arena. Die Werkself were far from their best against Der Rekordmeister, but thanks to a combination of determination, quality,
and a touch of the black arts, the defending champions were able to leave Bavaria with one point. While keeping Bayern to a 1-1 draw
would have been perfect for Xabi Alonso, given Leverkusen’s defensive struggles this season, the Spaniard would have been even more
pleased if he had established a Bundesliga record as well. Alonso has faced Bayern four times since taking over at the BayArena, and he is
undefeated against the record champions, having won two at home and drawn two away. No other manager or head coach in league
history has been able to remain undefeated in their first four matches against Der Rekordmeister, and with history established, there are
questions about when this streak will end. Die Werkself have been far from convincing this season, but if they regain their rhythm, there is
no reason to believe Bayern will be favourites in the rematch in February.
