Quarterfinals: Ghirls defeats Montrose to advance to the Sky Sports Cup
Celtic FC Women defeated Montrose at Links Park on Sunday afternoon to secure their spot in the Sky Sports Cup quarterfinals.
The Ghirls put up a strong show and defeated the SWPL team with a score of (insert score) thanks to their dominant performance.
It was swiftly back to domestic play after a memorable night in midweek,
when Elena Sadiku’s team secured a spot in the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stages.
The Hoops travel up north to take on Montrose when they play in the Round Two of the Sky Sports Cup.
The Celtic team made nine changes to the lineup from their victory
over Vorskla Poltava in the middle of the week, demonstrating their depth in the squad once again.
And Mathilde Carstens’ early goal gave the Hoops a great demonstration of their fast-paced style of play.
The midfielder picked up the ball just outside the box, and with a deft spin,
she found space for the strike and the bottom corner.
Shortly after her hat-trick at Links Park, Saoirse Noonan was back in the starting lineup and back among the goals.
Five minutes after Carstens had opened the score,
the forward grabbed her first of the afternoon with a fantastic strike that volleyed the ball into the far top corner of the net.
After many efforts inside the area, the Ireland international didn’t have to wait long to score another goal,
thumping the ball home at the back post just before the half hour mark.
Kit Loferski scored the first of his brace on minute 35, and Celtic continued to score goals in the first forty-five minutes.
The American beat the goalkeeper to the ball and used her speed to run through on goal, dinking it into the back of the net.
The Ghirls had a great first half, especially considering that they had just finished a huge European night.
Just minutes after the restart, Loferski scored her second goal of the afternoon with a neat finish into the top corner of the net, making it even better at the start of the second half.
The Celts might have let off the gas now that they were guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals.
Still, they didn’t let up and increased the score in the last few minutes.
First, summer deadline day addition Morgan Cross scored the team’s first goal by finishing off Maria McAneny’s low cross.
Celya Barclais then scored her first goal of the season with a finish at the back post.
For Sadiku and her team, it was yet another triumphant outcome after a demanding week.
The first meeting between the teams this season will take place on Thursday night at Broadwood Stadium when they host the Rangers.
