Why Celtic icon Scott Brown will not become St Johnstone’s new manager
Legendary Celtic player Scott Brown has decided to remain at Ayr United after declining the chance to take over as manager of St Johnstone this week.
Adam Webb, the owner of the Saints, was eager to bring in Brown to take Craig Levein’s place.
Given that Brown was supposedly “keen” to speak with the Scottish Premiership team, it appeared as though the former Celtic hero’s next managerial move would be imminent.
But it appears that Brown has made the decision to remain at Ayr United, as he will be in the dugout for his upcoming home game on Saturday against Greenock Morton at Somerset Park.
The pursuit of Scott Brown by St Johnstone
Despite playing one additional game, Scott Brown of Ayr United is enjoying a fantastic season and leads the Scottish Championship.
Nevertheless, Brown concluded that a move to Perth wasn’t for him, according to the Daily Mail, despite having discussions with the former Celtic captain earlier this week.
Undeterred, Webb, the owner of the Saints, tried one final time on Wednesday to get Brown to move to McDiarmid Park. Nevertheless, the Celtic veteran refused to back down and will continue to lead Ayr United for the foreseeable future despite two attempts to change his mind.
Evidently, whatever Webb and Brown discussed was insufficient to persuade Brown to take the next managerial move and result in St Johnstone’s defeat is undoubtedly Ayr’s gain.
St Johnstone will now concentrate on Peter Leven of Aberdeen and Tiernan Lynch, the coach of Larne.
Brown seems to be headed for a successful managing career.
After leaving Celtic in 2021 to gain experience as Jim Goodwin’s assistant at Aberdeen, Brown made his managerial debut.
Brown made the bold decision to transfer to England’s League One and take up the Fleetwood Town post after less than a season at Pittodrie.
Following a stellar debut campaign, the Celtic legend saved Fleetwood from relegation and created FA Cup history by helping them go to the fifth round for the first time ever.
Now at Ayr United, Brown looks like he has the south coast club on course for a promotion push as he continues his fledgling managerial journey.
Once asked about becoming the manager of Celtic one day, Brown said he had to ‘earn’ the right to do that and not get the job based on his previous history of the club.
Will that day ever come? Who knows but what is clear is that Brown was made for football management and looks set for a very good career as the main man.
