Ex-England boss is going to replace Dyche in Everton job

Gareth Southgate is being connected with the managerial post at Goodison Park following the Freidkin Group’s takeover agreement.

Everton revealed yesterday that Dan Friedkin’s consortium had finally reached an agreement with Farhad Moshiri to complete a takeover that appeared dead just two months ago.

This announcement has delivered much-needed positive vibrations for a club and, more importantly, a fan base that has suffered so much ill luck and mismanagement in recent years.

After a season in 2023-24 marked by two point deductions and a volatile situation involving the third of three efforts by investment groups to acquire control of Everton, the club eventually survived with games to spare.

The 777 Partners eight-month acquisition drama ended in dismal failure in early summer, leaving the Blues with no apparent future.

Dan Friedkin’s group emerged as the new front-runners among a number of potential investors, and they decided to work exclusively with Moshiri.

Then, just as it appeared that the tremendously destabilizing uncertainty surrounding future ownership would finally be settled, they withdrew due to concerns over the Toffees’ fragile debts.

Another American. John Textor appeared to be ready to make an attempt, but his co-ownership of another Premier League team Crystal Palace made it problematic and would take a long time to execute. Friedkin’s group has returned and completed a deal. We all hope that this story is finally ended.

If it is, the next big question is what the Friedkin group will do as Everton FC’s new owners.

Looking back at his time as owner of Roma in Italy, there will be investments to develop the first team while the owner remains out of the spotlight. Friedkin’s organization has taken rapid action to dismiss managers when they think it essential.

He brought in Jose Mourinho as a blockbuster managerial acquisition, but as is common with the contentious Portuguese, it did not last long. So, naturally, and following another dismal start to the new season, talk about Sean Dyche’s future has increased.

The front-runner to succeed Dyche if he is fired by the new owner when he takes over appears to be former England manager Gareth Southgate.

He is out of job following England’s defeat to Spain in the 2024 Euros final, the country’s second consecutive loss in the competition’s final, following Italy’s victory at Wembley three years earlier.

Southgate, a former Aston Villa and England player, has overseen a run of exceptionally constant national team success, with the exception of matching Alf Ramsey’s World Cup victory in 1966.

Despite England’s run to the final, there has been growing criticism of his caution and overly defensive tactics, which reached a climax in the most recent Euros tournament.

The Three Lions struggled to produce at the level that the squad’s skill promised, and supporters hoped for more flair and offensive football.

For his part, the manager appeared to be greatly impacted by these attacks on him, and he may not fair well in the brutal environment of Premier League football, especially with a faltering team on the pitch.

Since Dyche took over as Everton manager in January 2023, he has faced a barrage of criticism for his style. He seems to have a thick skin, though, and shrugs it off.

The Three Lions struggled to produce at the level that their talent suggested, and fans wished for more flair and offensive play.

For his part, the manager seems to be strongly influenced by these attacks on him, and he may not do well in the brutal climate of Premier League football, especially with a struggling squad on the field Since taking over as Everton manager in January 2023, Dyche has received a barrage of criticism for his tactics. He appears to have thick skin, however, and brushes it off.

Southgate would offer an improvement in terms of results, if not style or enthusiasm. To be honest, improved results and Premier League survival are more important than attractive football, at least until the season is over.

If the Blues replace Dyche with another coach who is seen to be conservative, David Moyes’ return to Goodison Park would be well received.

Moyes has the advantage of being a very experienced top flight manager in England, having previously worked at West Ham and Everton for eleven seasons. The Scot enjoyed his time on Merseyside and looks eager to return if the opportunity arises.

I don’t think a manager coming back ever works, so while Moyes did brilliantly to help Everton punch above their weight so often during his stay, I believe the club should look at new options if Dyche leaves.

Given his previous judgments, it is likely that Friedkin is looking for a high-profile coach to take over at his new team.
