Liverpool transfer ‘conflict’: Slot ‘changes his mind’ on £75m ‘top-class replacement’ for key Reds star
According to sources, Liverpool’s head coach Arne Slot has ‘changed his mind’ about England international Marc Guehi, who could’replace’ Virgil Van Dijk.
We’re approaching the summer transfer window. Liverpool were expected to prioritize the acquisition of a young center-back who could serve as a long-term successor for Van Dijk.
Despite this, the Premier League giants did not sign a new centre-back this summer. Instead, they acquired Federico Chiesa from Juventus and struck a deal with Valencia to sign Georgia international Giorgi Mamardashvili.
With Van Dijk out of contract in 2025, Liverpool could look to sign a new centre-back in January or next summer, and Guehi is allegedly on their radar. The England international was a standout performer at Euro 2024. Newcastle United sought him in the summer, but were unable to match his reported £75 million worth.
This allows rival Premier League clubs to make moves before January, and Guehi could be available because his contract expires in 2026.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot is being “won over” by Marc Guehi after receiving a ringing recommendation from the club’s recruitment squad, according to Football Insider.
‘The Reds expressed a genuine interest in the 24-year-old centre-back during the summer transfer window, but never pursued a deal because to Slot’s concerns. Slot sought a left-footed centre-back to give insurance and competition for Virgil van Dijk, with the hope that the possible top-class acquisition would eventually replace the Dutch international.
‘This contradicted Liverpool’s recruitment stance, which is that Guehi ticks all the right boxes for the squad after demonstrating his big-match mindset while playing for England in the 2024 Euros.
‘The Liverpool boss is already beginning to rethink his mind regarding Guehi, revealing that he believes the Palace player is capable of succeeding all-time great Van Dijk.’
Joshua Kimmich was another player linked with Liverpool this summer, and Caught Offside claims the ‘way has cleared’ for them to sign the Bayern Munich star after a rival dropped out.
‘Sources close to the subject have confirmed to CaughtOffside that PSG previously tracked Kimmich due to his contract status, but it is now believed that the Ligue 1 club is content with their midfield alternatives following the recent arrival of Joao Neves from Benfica.
‘Although the Kimmich to PSG discussion has come up again recently, it is now felt that other suitors like as Liverpool, and potentially others yet to come,
The Premier League would have an advantage in the hunt to capture the German international as he approaches free agency.
‘Kimmich will be out of contract at Bayern next summer unless a new deal is reached before then, which is still a possibility, even though there are no firm updates on those conversations at the present.
‘CaughtOffside knows Liverpool is still looking for a midfielder, having attempted and failed to recruit Martin Zubimendi in the summer when the Real Sociedad star turned down an offer from the Merseyside club.
‘Zubimendi is still valued by Arne Slot and other senior figures at Liverpool, but Kimmich has emerged as a viable and cost-effective option for the club.’
