Rangers have had a difficult 2024, which didn’t improve over the summer as Philippe Clement worked with one hand tied behind his back.

Rebuilding a squad is always easier when a manager is given finances to invest, but just about £7 million left the Ibrox coffers after departures.

One of the most painful transfers of the summer was Rangers not being able to bring Abdallah Sima back to the city where his first child was born.

Abdallah Sima makes Champions League impact following Rangers romance.
As the window progressed, optimism mounted that a deal may be reached; however, Rangers struggled to get players out, and Sima relocated to Brest.

Despite not being a particularly large team, they are nonetheless in the Champions League.

Sima has demonstrated his ability to compete on this scale by scoring the winning goal against Sturm Graz.

Clement spoke about his desire to sign Sima during the summer and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Gers boss was the first to pick up the phone to congratulate the 22-year old when you look back to what he said:

“I’ve been in touch with him, of course.

“He’s like one of my sons. Abda loves the club. Abda loves the way of playing we had last season and his role in that. He loved his teammates and the staff.

“But at the end of the day, Brighton is the owner so it’s all about the money then. At the moment it’s not possible. But we will see along the way if there comes a possibility because we would love to get him back. We will see if it is possible.”

Can Rangers return for Sima?

To make matters worse, when Sima signed for Brest, it wasn’t Brighton that he sent a heartfelt goodbye message to, it was Rangers:

“The time has come for me to say goodbye to a club for which I have a lot of affection, for which I took immense pleasure in playing for this club.

“It is very difficult to find the words but I would like to thank all the club staff, the staff, my teammates, and especially you, the supporters, who have always been there for me and for the club. It’s you who makes this club so special!

“Thank you also to Michael Beale for giving me the chance to play for this great club, and thank you to Philippe Clement for allowing me to realise my dream of winning a title with this magnificent club. Come on Rangers!”

Brest don’t have an option to buy for Sima so the Senegal international will return to the south coast at the end of the season.

By that point, he will have just a year left on his contract and Brighton will be keen to sell.

With Vaclav Cerny only on loan, Rangers will have space on the wage bill for a first choice winger next summer and Sima will be near the top of the shopping list given that he – apart from recent injury issues – is almost risk free.

Unfortunately, if Sima keeps scoring goals in the Champions League, Rangers might be struggling to afford him – again.
