Director says he has not held talks with Rangers over transfer for 26-year-old
FC Twente has not heard anything from Rangers about bringing Gijs Smal to
the Scottish Premiership during the summer transfer window.
That is according to Arnold Bruggink, the Eredivisie club’s football director.
Gijs Smal’s contract expires at the end of the current season, and despite Twente’s best efforts,
an extension has yet to be reached. As a result of the persistent uncertainty about his future,
Rangers are apparently considering the talented Dutchman as they examine their alternatives,
with Borna Barisic’s contract set to expire in a few months.
However, while Twente manager Bruggink is aware of the speculations linking Smal to Ibrox,
Rangers have yet to contact the Enschede side to express their interest.
Twente chief downplays Rangers’ Gijs Smal links
“We are still in conversation with Gijs about extending his contract. “I do not assume Smal will not sign,” Bruggink told RTV Oost.
“We have a meeting with his agent next week.”
“I have mainly heard (about Rangers’ interest), but it has never reached our ears in any case.”
Twente added another left-back to their squad on deadline day last week, signing Anass Salah-Eddine from Ajax.
He was also linked with Rangers, via Fabrizio Romano, before Philippe Clement’s team switched their attention to Jefte Vital of Fluminense.
“Anass is a great player,” Bruggink continues. “He is a wonderful player who we think can be of great value to us in the future.”
Ridvan Yilmaz is still at Ibrox.
Rangers were unable to get a new left-back after signing Oscar Cortes, Fabio Silva, and Mohamed Diomande. Jefte came the closest to arriving,
but a potential £400,000 transfer fell through when APOEL Nicosia refused to terminate his season-long loan in Cyprus.
As a result, the Gers look hesitant to sell Ridvan Yilmaz until a replacement is found.
Galatasaray are apparently willing to offer about £2 million for the former Besiktas flier,
with the Turkish transfer window remaining open until February 9th.
Rangers want at least £4 million for a guy playing the best football of his Ibrox career.
