Nottingham Forest have perfect template to follow as Nuno weighs up big Brighton decisions
The strategy implemented by head coach Nuno Espirito Santo was spot on last weekend as Nottingham Forest defeated Liverpool 1-0.
In order to keep the Reds’ perfect start to the Premier League season, the Portuguese will have to start the entire process over. He will undoubtedly need to consider a few options when it comes to choosing his squad.
Nuno concentrated on stifling the hosts’ threat by packing the middle of the ground at Anfield. Is he going to start the same lineup against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday (2pm kickoff)?
“Elliot Anderson and Nico Dominguez played wide early on. Dealing with the full-backs’ inside runs while performing their defensive duties made it impossible for them to last the game,” Nuno said of his strategy on Merseyside. “We knew we had to make subs. The subs came in and made an impact, which is good.”
Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi both made an impact off the bench; the latter set up his teammate for the game’s lone goal. However, both will be itching to return to the south coast starting lineup.
Brighton will be a formidable opponent because they have also started the season well. Nevertheless, Ipswich Town showed that they may be frustrated, and Nuno will undoubtedly examine the details of their 0-0 stalemate from the previous Saturday.
In that deadlock, the Seagulls possessed the majority of the ball, but their opponents held tight to prevent them from getting close. Nuno has to decide whether to keep Anderson and Dominguez in their previous roles or switch them up and bring in the enthusiasm of
Hudson-Odoi and Elanga later on, is the right way to go.
Of course, he could start Hudson-Odoi and Elanga but mix up his midfield. Ryan Yates and James Ward-Prowse were tasked with providing a shield for the defence last time out.
“The mid block was so good. For the most part, it was best-practice in how to defend in the middle of the pitch,” Yates said afterwards.
Ward-Prowse definitely impressed on his debut and seems likely to have cemented his place in the team. Anderson, too, is all-but undroppable a few games into the campaign. If Nuno decides to field his out-and-out wingers from the off, perhaps he will consider if those two can work together as a midfield partnership. Ward-Prowse didn’t really get a proper chance to show off his set-piece skills at Anfield but they can be a very useful weapon as the season progresses.
