It is very possible that fans will have seen one player in a Wolves shirt for the last time against Brighton.

Wanderers are now out of the Carabao Cup after losing 3-2 to Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

Carlos Baleba opened the scoring for the hosts after he picked the pocket of Joao Gomes before striking from the edge of the box.

Simon Adingra made it two after cutting inside, but Goncalo Guedes gave Wolves a lifeline with his third goal of the season just before half-time.

Wolves had chances to draw level, but could not find that cutting edge when they needed to. Ferdi Kadioglu scored a third for Brighton, with Tommy Doyle adding a consolation for the visitors.

So another defeat for Wolves, and there were some really poor displays last night.

And it could be that Jose Sa actually played for the final time for Wolves.

Jose Sa may not play for Wolves again after Brighton horror show

Jose Sa was given a start by Gary O’Neil against the Seagulls, which was his first appearance since the Saudi transfer window closed.

Sa was expected to make a move to the SPL, but in the end nothing materialised.

Wolves bought Sam Johnstone for £10 million, which did seem to suggest that Sa would be on his way.

But he has stuck around. Against Nottingham Forest, O’Neil left the Portuguese stopper out of his matchday squad due to the unsettling period he’d had.

Sa then returned against Newcastle, but only to the bench with Johnstone keeping his place in the starting XI.

Sa played against Brighton last night, and it was an awful showing, with some fans noting that he looked short of confidence.

He seemed slow getting down to Baleba and Adingra’s strikes, and he then parried Welbeck’s effort into the path of Kadioglu for the third goal.

On the first goal, Sa also let the ball roll for too long as it came back to him, and arguably should have just cleared his lines rather than going short.

A long way back for Sa

Both O’Neil and Matt Hobbs talked about having strong competition in the goalkeeping department when Johnstone was signed.

But it is very clear that Johnstone is now the new number one at Molineux, and it would be no surprise now if Sa – a £7 million signing – did not make another appearance for Wolves.

It was widely known that he was being lined up for a move to Saudi Arabia in the last window.

For one reason or another, it didn’t happen, and he now finds himself in a strange situation. And that situation has clearly affected him – his performance against Brighton was way short of the standards expected from him.

With Dan Bentley signing a new contract earlier this week, which points to him staying long-term as a number two, it is difficult to see where Sa’s next Wolves appearance comes from, especially with Wolves now out of the Carabao Cup.

Unless Johnstone picks up an injury or a suspension, Sa’s showing against Brighton might just have been his last. Even if Johnstone gets ruled out, it’s very possible O’Neil will now turn to Bentley over Sa.
