Over the previous three seasons, the CelticsJames McCarthy scenario has truly perplexed the fans.

The former Republic of Ireland great, who was signed by Ange Postecoglou for free, has cost Celtic a small fortune in salary and produced very little in return.

McCarthy’s only outing in the green and white Hoops this season came during a Celtic B match against East Kilbride. McCarthy is yet to make an appearance under Brendan Rodgers.

So it would stand to reason that the club would accept an offer for the 33-year-old without hesitation, would they?

Not at all. Gordon Dalziel, a pundit, feels that Celtic turned down a loan deal from Greek team Volos FC in January and that the decision was entirely justified.

James McCarthy was the proper decision made by Celtic

Indeed, expert Gordon Dalziel feels that Volos was trying to take advantage of Celtic by refusing to pay a portion of McCarthy’s salary, which is why Volos was rejected.

Dalziel stated, “You look at James McCarthy just quickly. I think that they rejected it because the club looked at the situation that was going to take him on loan and tried to use it to their advantage.

“Now if you’re going to take a player on loan you’ve got to contribute something to it and I think that Celtic felt that the club wasn’t prepared to do that.

“So what is the point in putting a player out there and recouping nothing for him and not getting any wages or nothing towards his wages and that’s why Celtic have probably dug their heels in.”

Evidently, Volos believed they could acquire McCarthy for a low price after observing his dearth of Celtic appearances.

The Parkhead club declined that offer, believing it would be better to hang onto McCarthy than to give in to pressure.

I would have, in my judgment, let him go. McCarthy’s wage of £14,000 per week is already covered by Celtic, so letting him leave and receive some playing time would have put him in the window.

Surely that would have made more sense than his sitting in the bleachers or on the Celtic bench, given that his contract wasn’t expiring until the following summer?
