34 penalties and 11 changes: Fulham experience huge blow ahead of Newcastle United match
Fulham will play this Saturday against Newcastle United. Kickoff is at Craven Cottage at 3pm.
Fulham’s season has started apathetically.
collecting five of a potential twelve Premier League points thus far.
Tuesday night, when Fulham lost to lower league opponents in one of the two
domestic cup competitions, dealt a severe blow to that apathetic start.
Prior to the Newcastle United encounter,
Marco Silva took a calculated gamble by starting a completely different lineup
for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup meeting than the eleven that began
the 1-1 home draw against West Ham on Saturday.
There were just 5,530 people present at Deepdale.
but they had no idea that they were going to witness a piece of history
and have an extremely long night.
After 35 minutes, Ryan Ledson gave Preston the lead, putting Fulham behind.
Reiss Nelson’s equalizer in minute 61 went to the visitors.
who were the superior team overall that evening.
There will be no more goals, and as extra time is irrelevant at this point in the tournament,
Penalties will be used for a “quick” finish.
Freddie Woodman, a former Newcastle United keeper, is the Preston goalie.
After only 32 penalties, the shootout result was 15 against 15, with each team missing one.
Timothy Castagne stepped up to take the 33rd penalty of the shootout but lashed it over Woodman’s bar.
Ryan Ledson then stepping up to take the 34th penalty and send Preston through to the last 16.
A bit of League Cup history created as this penalty shootout surpassed the 14 v 13
when Derby eventually beat Carlisle back in August 2016.
