Why Ron Rivera is a good fit to be the next defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys
Ron Rivera, the head coach of the Washington Commanders and the former Carolina Panthers, will be interviewed this week by the Dallas Cowboys for the position of defensive coordinator.
It’s interesting to note that Dan Quinn, the former defensive coordinator for the Cowboys, chose the head coach position with the Commanders, leaving a vacancy in D.C.
It’s evident that the ‘Boys, led by offensive-minded head coach Mike McCarthy, are searching for a seasoned defensive mind. Jerry Jones, the operator, is participating in these interviews in the interim.
In addition to Rivera, two other possibilities being mentioned in Big D are the esteemed Don “Wink” Martindale and former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, Mike Zimmer.
The reasons Ron Rivera is a great fit for the Dallas Cowboys
Rivera is a 62-year-old football lifer. Following his stellar playing career as a Chicago Bears linebacker, he has assumed a number of responsibilities. There is no denying the experience factor.
He was the Bears’ defensive coordinator from 2004 to 2006. That squad finished first and third in points allowed during his final two seasons in Chicago.
Rivera oversaw two top-11 scoring defenses while serving as the defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers from 2008 to 2010.
He was hired as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers as a result, and throughout his nine seasons there, he had a 76-63-1 record. One of those was an appearance in the Super Bowl after the 2015 season.
Dallas needs someone with precisely this kind of experience to manage its defense. It will not be easy to replace Dan Quinn. In his final two seasons with the Cowboys, he led two defenses ranked in the top five. They won 12 games a season primarily because of it.
For the Cowboys, having Rivera in the equation would be extremely beneficial.
Soon enough, we’ll find out if the Cowboys take this turn. It looks like they have a ton of choices for Quinn’s respected replacement. But given his background and prior achievements, Rivera appears to be a cut above the others.
