Celtic is about to embark on their most recent UEFA Champions League expedition.

On Wednesday, September 18, they will host SK Slovan Bratislava to begin their eight-game

European campaign in 2024–2025.

 

The premier competition for European club football has undergone a format change this year.

Instead of the customary four-team group stages,

Celtic will now play eight games against eight different teams.

four of which will be played at Celtic Park and the remaining four away from home.

Champions League new format—how does it work and what is the new league phase?

This year’s UEFA Champions League has a new format,

marking the first time the competition structure has been changed

since the European Cup changed to the UCL in 1992.

 

Gone are the familiar group stages and in its place is a 36-team league phase,

wherein each team plays eight different matches against eight different opponents.

 

The clubs who finish in 9th to 24th place will play in a two-leg knockout phase play-off

to guarantee their spot in the competition’s knockout round,

while the top eight teams in the league will automatically advance to the round of 16.

 

Teams that place 25th or lower will be eliminated; unlike in past years,

they won’t be eligible to play in the UEFA Europa League.

The first UEFA Champions League games are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in the evening.

The first game for Celtic is scheduled for Wednesday, September 18, at 8 p.m. versus Slovan Bratislava.
