The Chicago Bears will surely bolster their running back group this offseason.

Since D’Onta Foreman is a free agent, a replacement must be found. To what extent, though, must the Bears concentrate on the position?

Khalil Herbert demonstrated his ability as the lead back. Roschon Johnson proved he could run with a head of steam when given the chance, and he was an excellent pass-catching running back.

So, is it really necessary for the Bears to pursue a top running back this offseason? According to David Kenyon of Bleacher Report, the Bears are the “ideal landing spot” for both Austin Ekeler and Saquon Barkley.

Are Austin Ekeler and Saquon Barkley better fits for the Bears?

First up is Barkley, who will play in 2024 at the age of 27. Barkley had a breakout year in 2022, but he had to play behind one of the weakest offensive lines in the league and with a challenging quarterback scenario the following season.

If he reverted to what he was in 2022, Barkley could add quite a bit to this offense. He’s still one of the more well-rounded and electric players at his position. With Johnson and Herbert sprinkled in, Chicago would continue to stay atop the league in rushing.

But Barkley’s desire for a multi-year contract presents a dilemma because it isn’t a prudent move for the Bears. Since his rookie year, the player hasn’t participated in a whole season, and injuries have always been a worry. Barkley isn’t really a goal for a team like the Bears, who are trying to develop a younger team into a contender (ideally). In comparison to other free agents, he will also be more pricey.

Moving on, Ekeler appeared to be a completely different person in 2023. He was not able to be completely well. That’s where I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. However, Ekeler doesn’t really fit with the Bears’ present trend, much like Barkley does.

“Or, perhaps the Chicago Bears will offer more playing time and a longer-term contract with less money and a tougher path to the postseason,” Kenyon stated.

He will turn 29 in May, and past performance suggests that it is not a good idea to pay a running back who is 29 years old. Additionally, a running back with more than 1,400 career touches is being discussed. His remaining resources are limited, and while he intends to play in the upcoming season, it shouldn’t be in Chicago.

The Bears should again prioritize the draft before paying a free agent. Ryan Poles’ project will be worthwhile and long-lasting if he can build this roster through the draft.

The Bears should pass due to Barkley’s health, Ekeler’s aging and declining play, and the cost of signing both players.
