Cowboys Encouraged to Sign Former Eagles Starter Immediately

The Dallas Cowboys defeated against the New Orleans Saints 44-19 on Sunday, September 15. In a September 16 Bleacher Report article,

NFL writer and expert Matt Holder observes that it was a “humbling” Week 2 for “Mike McCarthy’s crew,” as the Saints went out to an

early lead and never looked back. Dallas is now 1-1, with a game versus Baltimore coming up next week. He also mentions a former

Philadelphia Eagles player whom he believes the organization should “add now.”

In the essay headed “Prioritizing Every Roster’s Biggest Weaknesses Before Week 3,” Holder advises that the Cowboys add linebacker

Zach Cunningham to their roster. He has Cunningham marked as “add now”.

“While the Cowboys’ linebackers played well in Week 1, they struggled to contain Alvin Kamara on Sunday,” the coach said. “Kamara

rushed for 115 yards (5.8 yards per carry) and four touchdowns while also gaining 65 yards and another score as a catch. Cunningham

might help slow down the running game, so he may be worth keeping on the practice squad—at least as a backup option.”

The Houston Texans chose Cunningham in the second round of the 2017 NFL draft as the 57th overall choice. The Texans waived

Cunningham in December 2021, and the Tennessee Titans claimed him off waivers the following month. Texas released Cunningham in

February 2023, and the Eagles signed him in August 2023. He became a free agent in March 2023.

In a September 14 post for Section 215, writer Devon Platana covers former Eagles players who are now free agents, including

Cunningham. He spoke some unflattering things about the linebacker’s time with the Eagles.

“Zach Cunningham only spent one season with the Eagles, and it was forgettable, to say the least,” he said in a letter. “In 13 games with

Philadelphia, the former 2017 57th-overall pick has 54 solo tackles, four broken-up passes, and a fumble recovery but did nothing

spectacular. His performance deteriorated throughout the season, as he finished with a Pro Football Focus defense grade of 59.6 or lower

in six of his last nine games.

Platana continued, “At the end of the day, Cunningham is an inconsistent tackler and pass rusher who also issues with coverage. Until he

can demonstrate that he can play a more complete game, his job opportunities will be limited.
