Brendan Rodgers’ work in the summer transfer window for Celtic is pretty close to being labelled as a huge success.

The signing of Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo secures the goalkeeping position for the next few years and adding Adam Idah as a challenger to Kyogo Furuhashi is inspired.

Added to that Auston Trusty, Paulo Bernardo and Luke McCowan as well as the loan signing of Alex Valle, Celtic look very strong heading into the Champions League opener this week.

However, it is the signing of Arne Engels that has Daily Record journalist Craig Swan purring after he watched the Belgian international help take Hearts apart at the weekend.

Arne Engels will ‘make a name for himself’ at Celtic

Swan was at Celtic Park covering the match and he was blown away at just how good the Belgian was and how cool Engels slotted his penalty away.

Swan said, “Oh, smooth as silk. Yeah, really.

“I’ve seen so many players playing for opposition teams, whether foreign club teams or foreign international teams. Guys with big physiques.  “And when we have technical players, they tend to be on the smaller side, or you have the bigger guys, they tend to be a bit lumpier and a bit more clumsy. “And you look at international midfield players, they’re six foot plus and they’re smooth as silk, and they move the ball brilliantly. And this boy does that.

“Every inch, I’m not going to make comparisons to players but I think the boy’s going to make a name for himself. But listen, you don’t want to go overboard.

“But you don’t play that many games in the Bundesliga, and you don’t get into the Belgian senior national team if you’ve not got it.

“So he clearly has it. But I think there were aspects, Celtic fans got to see everything yesterday. I think that was the thing that they were most excited about, and the fact that a ton of goals left when Matt O’Reilly went to Brighton.

“Within the first 15 minutes yesterday, Engels was in the box, hit one wide. He’s hit the inside of the post for his other foot. Two cracks at goal with one on either foot.

“He’s making breaking runs into the box. He’s playing passes, lovely flicks, lovely touches, great vision but also there were a couple of instances yesterday when he lost the ball, and he does the dirty work as well.

“Drifting in, running, chasing back, nicking possession back. He looks like he’s got the full package now.”

I have to say, Engels does look like he’s the real deal. At 21, he looks polished, calm under pressure and not afraid to attack the opposition’s goal.

If he continues to improve the way he has, Paulo Bernardo and Reo Hatate will both have serious competition to keep their places in the Celtic first team but that can only be a good thing for the Celtic supporters.
