Graeme Souness hits back at Rangers, Celtic jibe with £100m Premier League claim

Graeme Souness would like to see Rangers and Celtic compete in the English Premier

League, believing it would also help breathe new life into Scottish football.

On talkSPORT’s Simon & Souness podcast [5 February, 12m 16s], Simon Jordan brought up the age-old question of whether the Old Firm could ever seriously compete south of the line.

Souness stated that he would “100 percent” like to see Rangers and Celtic in the Premier League,

o which Jordan responded that it would “kill Scottish football” and that the duo would likely suffer.

In response, Souness stated that their current television income is approximately £3 million. Bournemouth,

where I live, is getting £100 million.

“Right now, the top two in Scotland dominate, and there’s nothing on the horizon to suggest this will change.

The other teams could qualify for the Champions League instead.

“Rangers and Celtic receive worldwide support.

If they were to operate down here, they could build a stadium for 100,000 people and still have a line outside wanting to get in.”

Neil Warnock’s hiring at Aberdeen has reignited the discussion over his ability to succeed in Scotland,

similar to the Rangers and Celtic Premier League.

Ally McCoist and Jeff Stelling spoke out on the topic earlier on Monday (5 February),

and Jordan and Souness have now followed suit.

Souness, like McCoist, is well-equipped to discuss the subject, having played for and managed the Gers.

And Souey is correct in pointing out that Rangers and Celtic have far less money than the English elite.

If Rangers can reach the Europa League final with such a modest budget,

imagine what happens if a couple of £15 million+ players are brought in.

That is not to diminish the quality of the vast majority of teams in England’s top flight,

but would Rangers struggle to compete with Sheffield United and Burnley right now, given their meager TV revenue?

However, this is unlikely to happen anytime soon, if at all.
