Everton may have to wait a little longer to learn about any potential punishment imposed on Nottingham Forest for alleged financial rule violations.

Both Forest and Everton were accused of violating the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) earlier in January, with Forest’s hearing taking place on Thursday. Usually, the commission must reach a decision within a week of the hearing.

However, The Athletic believes Everton and other Premier League clubs would not know the outcome of Forest’s plea until Monday. Everton’s lawsuit is scheduled to begin after the verdict against Forest has been rendered. Both teams have the ability to appeal their respective decisions, which might take until after the season’s last day.

Premier League rules state that clubs can only lose up to £105 million in three years, or £35 million every season. This maximum is lower for teams that were promoted inside the applicable three-year cycle.

It means Forest have only been permitted to lose £61 million in the last three seasons: £13 million for the two seasons they spent in the Championship before moving up, plus £35 million last season. It is unclear how much they are claimed to have exceeded this restriction.

Everton is interested in Forest’s situation because both clubs are fighting to avoid relegation. Everton’s November 10-point deduction has been lowered to six, putting the Blues in 16th place, one point ahead of Forest.

When asked about the issue ahead of Forest’s match against Luton this weekend, manager Nuno Espirito Santo said: “No, we are not nervous. We had been waiting since we learned that there would be a hearing. Let us wait and see.

“We don’t know precisely when it will occur. The club will take care of this. In terms of football, our team focuses solely on the pitch. We don’t know when it will come. I believe the sooner the better.”

With Everton out this weekend due to their opponents Liverpool’s participation in the FA Cup quarter-finals, a win for Forest would put them ahead of the Blues.
