Rangers should face points deduction as former referees call for firm SFA punishments after Celtic flashpoints
The top of the table showdown was marred by glass bottles being thrown on the pitch with a Parkhead staff member also injured.
Two former referees have stated that Rangers should receive a point punishment for the nasty incidents that marred the derby match against Celtic.
Joe Hart informed the stewards and Willie Collum that his goal mouth was covered in shards,
which caused a delay in the start of the second half.
It was discovered after the final whistle that a Celtic employee had been struck by a bottle during the match.
Rangers have announced they are examining stadium CCTV in an effort to identify the perpetrators,
and Police Scotland have opened an inquiry into the incident.
Former whistleblowers Des Roache and Steve Conroy have called on the SFA to intervene.
Conroy stated on the Get Involved Referee podcast: “Fans, in particular,
don’t give a damn if the club gets fined.” To them, it doesn’t matter.
“Perhaps they will pay attention if their team loses three, five, 10, and finally twenty points.
“Maybe it is time that the clubs were held responsible for it because nothing else seems to be happening.”
“I think they’ve (Rangers) have to hold their hands up and say they’re responsible for what goes on in their house,” Roache said in support of the deduction request.
“I hope the fans will be recognized, chastised, and have their season tickets revoked.
“It’s unacceptable, and I believe the clubs have a responsibility of care to ensure the safety of everyone present in their stadium.
“I would take the points deduction, in my opinion.
If you are going to treat this as a serious matter, that is where it will harm the team and the supporters.
Even if you block off a portion of the stand, 35,000 people will still be present.
Fans are what you’re missing out on; players had to play through a lockdown without any support.
However, if you are docked points, the players will sense it,
and the spectators will sense it as well.
“This has to be the line in the sand for the SFA and SPFL,
or whoever is going to do it. From now on, all bets are out for the upcoming season.
“Every club, whether it’s Celtic, Rangers, Livingston, whoever,
then they’ll know this will be the sanction and the deterrent in what will happen.”
