Alan Brazil reacts live on talkSPORT to what Ally McCoist told him about Rangers and Celtic
Even if other teams have had successful seasons in the past, Ally McCoist feels that Rangers and Celtic have
“dominated” Scottish football for the past 100 years.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Thursday, March 14, the expert emphasized how Dundee United advanced to the
European Cup semifinals during the 1983–84 campaign and finished third in the UEFA Cup final three years later.
Alan Brazil enquired as to what had become of Scottish football since then, stating that the Old Firm had now “run
away with it” and that the last time a team other than the Glasgow clubs had won the SPL was Aberdeen in 1985.
However, McCoist maintained that Rangers and Celtic have been at the forefront of Scottish football since the
beginning, despite the fact that teams like Aberdeen and Dundee United were “brilliant” in the 1980s.
“Listen, Dundee United got beat in a European Cup semi-final and they were actually cheated, they got beat by Roma
3-0 away from home, it was a disgrace,” said McCoist. “They beat them 2-0 at home in the semi-final of the
European Cup and then got beat 3-0 away. Unless I’m wrong, three years later,
they were runners-up in the UEFA Cup final.”
“That was incredible,” Brazil retorted. “So, Ally, what has transpired? Rangers and Celtic are suddenly running away
with it. Rangers have returned, and Celtic have finished, but what else is going on?
“Celtic and Rangers have dominated Scottish football for a century, with the utmost respect,” McCoist continued.
“Generally speaking, Rangers and Celtic have dominated Scottish football since it began, but there have been times
when other teams have emerged and there was that period when Dundee United and Aberdeen were brilliant.”
Rangers and Celtic continue to dominate Scottish football
Though there have undoubtedly been times when the other Scottish teams have put Rangers and Celtic to the test,
they have unquestionably dominated Scottish football since the league’s founding.
With Aberdeen, Hearts, and Hibernian tied for four league titles apiece, the Old Firm teams have accumulated an
incredible 108 SPL titles between them.
Everyone wants the league to be a little more competitive, but with the Glasgow clubs’ bigger fan numbers and much
higher revenue, it’s just so hard for the other teams to compete.
Though each team has had respectable decades before the other has then taken over for a few years, there have been
occasions when just one of the Gers or Hoops has dominated the proceedings.
With only a few games remaining, Philippe Clement’s team is leading the Parkhead club by two points in the
standings, and there isn’t much separating them in the title fight this year.
In other Rangers news, Keown has extolled the virtues of an undervalued Gers player based on his observations.
