Source: Lakers’ rumored offseason blockbuster plan is already ruined.

The Los Angeles Lakers may have had huge plans for the following summer,

which is one of the reasons they decided against making a trade at the deadline this

season. It’s easy to concentrate on the future because no trades that made sense for

LA surfaced.

The Lakers will have more options going forward because they may now trade three

unprotected draft picks in any transaction.

The Lakers were only able to make one deal all season. Los Angeles will be allowed to

trade its first-round selections in 2024, 2029, and 2031, provided the New Orleans

Pelicans decide to select the Lakers’ pick in 2025 rather than 2024—which is a

logical decision.

The Lakers are circling some major names to target this summer with their arsenal of

picks. As a result, Los Angeles has a direct connection to two all-star guards:

Mitchell is the superior choice, and there has been increased rumor that the

Cavaliers may move him at some time. Having said that, it now appears improbable

that a Mitchell swap will occur at all, which is unfortunate for the Lake Show.

This directly contradicts the conjecture that has been circulating around Mitchell and

the Cavaliers up to this point. Given how quickly things change in the NBA, this does

not totally rule out a trade, but it does make one appear much less likely than it did

previously.

There will only be one true superstar splash for the Lakers this summer if Mitchell

does decide to sign an extension with the Cavaliers.

Despite his popularity, Young would not fit well with LeBron James and Anthony

Davis and would be a far worse trade target than Mitchell.

Even with his exceptional potential, Young’s isolation style of play and inability to

defend inherently restrict him as a contributor. He is basically a slightly improved

version of D’Angelo Russell’s current Lakers performance. Is all of that worth giving

up the team’s whole near-term future for? Most likely not.

Remember that Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura would almost definitely need to

be included in a trade for Young if D’Lo chooses to opt out of his contract.

It will resemble the Russell Westbrook transaction if the Lakers trade those two

players for Young along with three first-round choices.

It is a different scenario if Mitchell is present. However, it would be wise for the

Lakers to merely hold off on making a major deal during the summer if Young is

their only realistic alternative.
